About the authors

Cassio Luiselli Fernández

He graduated as an economist from the UNAM, Mexico and obtained his masters and doctorate from the University of Wisconsin, specializing in agricultural economy and international affairs. Subsequently, he attained a doctorate in Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of South Africa. He is currently an Associate Researcher in the University Program of Development Studies, UNAM and Emeritus Professor of the Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico City Campus). He is also a post-graduate professor at Instituto Mora. He is a member of the Advisory Council on Food Safety of the Americas (IICA, 2020) and belongs to several professional associations. He was the Permanent Representative for Mexico before the Latin American Association of Integration (ALADI) and Mexican Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Uruguay and South Africa, being the first Mexican Ambassador during the government of Nelson Mandela. He was Under Secretary of Standards and Environmental Development (SEMARNAT in Spanish), Advisor to the President of the Republic and General Coordinator of the Mexican Food System. Within the international context, he was an Associate Director of the Mexican Branch of CEPAL (United Nations) and Deputy Director General for Operations of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation to Agriculture (IICA). He has been a professor at several universities in Mexico and abroad. He was the Director of the Department of International Studies of Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico City Campus) and visiting professor at the Universities of California (San Diego), Wisconsin and Oxford, England. He was granted the “Leader in Food Policy” award by the Kellogg Foundation. He has been recognized in five countries and has been awarded FAO’s Medal of Merit. He has authored and co-authored several books and more than fifty professional papers. His most recent books are Agricultura y Alimentación en México: Evolución, Desempeño Perspectivas (2017) and Territorios, Ciudades y Pequeños Productores (2019).

Sabine Papendieck

She holds a degree in Political Sciences specialized in International Relationships from the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina (Honours Degree), and a Magister in International Economic Relationships and Negotiations from the Universidad of San Andrés-FLACSO-Universidad of Barcelona. She is a managing partner at ESTRATECO Consultores, where she carries out her professional activity as international consultant and researcher specialized in market access for agro-industrial products, international commercial negotiations, sustainability and formulation of public – private policies, advising both the corporate exporting sector and governments and international bodies. She is the General Coordinator of the Argentine Carbon-Neutral Program (PACN in Spanish) for foods, beverages and bio-energy exports. She is a member of the GPPS Network and a university professor of Economy, International Trade and Sustainability at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She has authored several publications on sustainability, climate change, world food trade, and related topics.

Martín Piñeiro

He holds a degree in agricultural engineering from the Universidad of Buenos Aires and a PhD in Agricultural Economics from the University of California, Davis. He is currently director of the Committee for Agrarian Affairs of the Argentine Council of International Relations (CARI in Spanish); advisor to the Director General of the IICA; and member of the Advisory Council on Food Safety of the Americas, IICA. He is a founding member and participates in the Advisory Council of the GPS network. He is a crop-livestock producer. He has been Under Secretary of Agrarian Economy; General Director of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation to Agriculture (IICA/OEA); president of the Board of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI); and member of the Program Committees of ISNAR, CIAT and ICARDA. He has published extensively on economic development, international scenarios and agriculture, agricultural policy and innovation, and international trade.

Álvaro Ramos

He is an agricultural engineer, specialized in Investment Policies for the Development, Design and Evaluation of Development-oriented Investment Projects and in International Trade Negotiations in Agriculture. Currently he oversees the preparation of final works at the degree of International Studies, School of Social Sciences, Universidad ORT in Uruguay. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering of Uruguay, the Executive Board of Universidad CLAEH in Uruguay, and the Advisory Council on Food Safety of the Americas, IICA. He was Uruguay’s Minister of Livestock, Agriculture, Fishing and Minister of Foreign Relations, and Senator of the Republic, between 1989 and 1998. For the past twenty years, he has been the Coordinator of the Regional Program for MERCOSUR of the UN International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), working on Public policies for Family Agriculture, Rural Development and the Reduction of Rural poverty. He has been a consultant for international organizations such as ALADI, FAO, IICA, ONUDI and BID.

Eduardo Trigo

He has obtained a PhD in Agrarian Economy at the University of Wisconsin. He specializes in the area of policies and management of science, technology and innovation in agriculture and natural resources, with special emphasis in bio-economy. He has published several articles and books on these topics. He is currently professor of Bio-economy at the Center for Agri-Business and Foods of the Universidad Austral, Argentina; and advisor to the Direction of Technical Cooperation of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture. He has been advisor to the School of Agronomy of the Universidad de Buenos Aires and different national and international organizations, including the Inter-American Institute for the Cooperation to Agriculture (IICA) and the International Service for the National Agricultural Investigation (ISNAR), where he acted as Director for Research and Transfer of Technology and Director for Research, respectively. As consultant, he has collaborated with the European Union, the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank, the Institute for Environment of Stockholm, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and several crop and livestock research entities of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Mario Trucco

He is Magister in Agri-Business and Foods and holds a degree in Agrarian Administration from UNCPBA. He is a member of the National General Audit of Argentina (AGN) as specialist in agri-business, developing analysis and research in trust funds related to the implementation of public policies for agri-foods. He has carried out consulting activities as research assistant for the World Bank, the IDB, the FAO, LATN, and CINDES.
